相傳爲西漢初毛亨、毛萇開創解說《詩經》含義的學派，屬古文學派。漢代流傳於民間，東漢經學家鄭玄曾爲《毛傳》作《箋》。後三家詩亡佚，至唐代，《毛傳》和《鄭箋》成爲官方承認的《詩經》註釋依據，受到後世推崇。《毛詩》現已成爲《詩經》的代稱。
二毛曾註詩經，故曰毛詩。
